Pregnancy does not require you to suddenly become comfortable in front of a camera. You do not need to know how to pose. You do not need to arrive with a Pinterest board full of ideas. You do not need to buy an entirely new wardrobe or figure out which angle makes your body look “best.”
That is my job.
A maternity session should feel less like showing up for a photo shoot you have to perform for and more like being taken care of while we create something beautiful together.
I photograph maternity portraits for clients throughout Vancouver, Washington and Portland, Oregon with a focus on intentional light, rich color, movement, and fine art imagery. Some sessions are soft and ethereal. Some are bold and dramatic. Some are sensual. Most include a little bit of everything.
This guide walks you through when to schedule maternity photos, what to wear, how to prepare, what posing actually looks like, and what you can expect when you step into my studio.
When Should You Schedule Maternity Photos?
For most pregnancies, I recommend photographing your maternity session somewhere around 28 to 34 weeks. At that point, your belly usually has a beautiful, defined shape while you are still comfortable enough to move through different poses and wardrobe changes.
That said, pregnancy does not operate according to a photography rulebook. If you are carrying multiples, have a history of delivering early, or simply know that the third trimester hits you hard, we may photograph you earlier. If you are feeling incredible at 35 weeks and want to wait, we can talk about that too.
The bigger planning consideration is actually when you book, not just when we photograph you.
I recommend reaching out during your second trimester whenever possible. That gives us time to plan your vision, schedule hair and makeup if you want it, talk wardrobe, and reserve a session date before the end of pregnancy suddenly arrives at warp speed.
What Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?
Here is the good news: you do not have to figure this out alone. Before your session, we will talk through what you already own, what you may want to bring, and what I have available in the studio.
Depending on the look we are creating, maternity wardrobe can include:
flowing fabrics and draping
fitted dresses or bodysuits
lingerie
oversized shirts or jackets
structured pieces
sheer fabrics
simple underwear
or nothing at all
There is no requirement that maternity photography has to look delicate and pastel just because you are pregnant. If soft and romantic feels like you, we can absolutely create that.
If you want dramatic shadows, saturated color, sculptural posing, or images that feel more like a magazine editorial than traditional maternity photography, we can create that too.
The goal is not to squeeze you into someone else's idea of what maternity portraits are supposed to look like.
The goal is to photograph you.
Do I Need to Know How to Pose?
No.
Please do not stand in front of your mirror practicing poses before your maternity session.
I mean it.
Being “photogenic” is not a skill you need to bring into my studio.
I guide you through the entire session, from what to do with your hands to where to place your weight, how to breathe, where to look, and how small adjustments change the way light moves across your body. I am demonstrating the pose myself, right along with you. I am physically on the floor showing you exactly what I want you to do.
You are not going to hear “Okay, now just do something cute.”
Absolutely not. 😂
My responsibility as your photographer is to understand posing, lighting, angles, movement, and composition well enough that you don't have to.
And if there is an area of your body you would rather not emphasize, tell me.
Body positivity does not mean you lose the right to have preferences or boundaries. We can celebrate your body while still honoring how you want to be photographed.
How Should I Prepare for My Maternity Session?
You do not need to overhaul your life the week before your photographs. A few simple things make the day easier:
Hydrate. Your skin and energy level will thank you.
Get some sleep. As much as pregnancy allows, obviously.
Moisturize. Especially arms, legs, stomach, shoulders, and anywhere that may be photographed.
Keep nails simple. Neutral or clean nails photograph beautifully and will not compete with the images.
Avoid spray tans right before your session. Uneven color tends to photograph far more obviously than it looks in person.
If you wax, do it at least 72 hours beforehand. Give your skin time to settle.
Eat before you come. Please do not skip food because you are being photographed. Your body is doing enough work already.
And bring anything we have discussed during your styling consultation. Beyond that? Show up. I will take it from there.
Where Do Maternity Sessions Take Place?
Most of my maternity sessions take place in my private studio just outside Portland and Vancouver. Having a controlled studio environment gives us something I value enormously: complete control over the light.
Rather than hoping the weather cooperates or chasing a sunset across a field, I can intentionally build the image. We can create soft directional light, deep shadows, rich saturated color, silhouettes, clean neutral portraits, or dramatic fine art imagery within the same session.
The studio also gives you privacy.
You can change wardrobe comfortably, photograph more intimate looks without an audience, take breaks when you need them, and move through the session without feeling rushed.
For certain concepts, luxury hotel sessions or other locations may also be available. But I am not choosing locations because they are generically “pretty.” The environment should support the photograph we are trying to create.
Can Maternity Photos Be Sensual?
Absolutely.
Pregnancy is one of the most dramatic physical transformations a body can experience. There is no reason maternity photography has to pretend sensuality disappears during pregnancy.
For some clients, that means a fitted dress and beautiful light. For others, it means lingerie, draping, bare skin, or portraits that sit somewhere between maternity and intimate photography.
Sensual does not have to mean explicit.
It can be the curve of your body in shadow. The way fabric falls across your stomach. The shape created by your hands. A glimpse of skin. A photograph that feels powerful instead of traditionally “sweet.”
You decide where that line exists for you. My job is to create a space where you feel safe enough to explore it.
Can My Partner Be Included?
Yes.
Your maternity session can absolutely include your partner. We can create portraits that feel connected and intimate without falling into stiff, traditional maternity posing.
Your partner does not need to know what to do either. I guide both of you.
And your entire session does not have to become a couples session just because they participate. We can create a few photographs together and then return the focus to you. I accomplish this by giving your partner the option to create couples portraits at the start or end of the session, so they only need to remain at the studio for their time in front of the camera. If they prefer to remain for the entire session as your support squad, that is great too. This session is designed for YOUR comfort.
What If I Don't Feel Beautiful During Pregnancy?
Then you are exactly the person I want to photograph.
You do not need to arrive feeling radiant. Some people love being pregnant. Some tolerate it. Some feel completely disconnected from their changing body.
All of those experiences are valid.
I love maternity photography in part because I never had maternity portraits created for myself. I know what it feels like to look back and wish I had documented that version of my body while it existed.
Your photographs do not have to prove that pregnancy was magical every second. They can simply say:
This was me. My body did this. I was here.
Sometimes seeing yourself through someone else's artistic perspective shifts something. Not because I transformed your body. Because I showed you what was already there.
What Happens After the Session?
I will not send you home wondering what happens next.
Your image reveal and ordering appointment happens in two weeks. Together, we go through your photographs and choose the images you love. From there, you can turn them into finished artwork, including luxury albums, fine art prints, and museum-quality wall pieces.
I believe photographs become more meaningful when they exist somewhere beyond your phone.
A maternity portrait can live on your wall. It can become part of an album your child sees years from now. It can exist as evidence of a version of you that only existed for a very short time.
That matters to me.
How Do You Choose the Right Maternity Photographer?
Look beyond whether someone can create a technically good photograph. Look through their portfolio and ask yourself:
Do I want to be photographed this way?
Can you see consistency in their work?
Does their style feel intentional?
Do they photograph bodies like yours?
Does their work make you feel something?
Then look at the experience.
Will they guide you?
Will they help with wardrobe?
Will you have privacy?
Do you feel comfortable communicating boundaries?
Can they explain what happens before, during, and after the session?
You should trust the person photographing you enough to stop worrying about how you look and allow yourself to be present.
That relationship matters just as much as the camera.
Your Maternity Session Does Not Have to Look Like Everyone Else's
There is no single correct way to photograph pregnancy.
Your portraits can be quiet.
They can be sensual.
They can be dramatic.
They can be strange and artistic and drenched in color.
They can feel soft one minute and powerful the next.
My work is not about creating some perfected version of you. It is about taking the body, personality, story, and season you bring into my studio and creating something intentional from it. When you step into my studio, your sole job is to be taken care of. I'll handle the rest.
Ready to Create Your Maternity Portraits?
I photograph fine art and sensual maternity sessions in Vancouver, Washington and the Portland, Oregon area, with limited travel availability.
Every session begins with a private consultation where we talk about your vision, timing, wardrobe, comfort level, and how you want to be photographed.
Your transformation starts with a conversation.
